Stainless Steel 317L Hex Bar/Rod is a low carbon austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in acidic and chloride environments. Its chemical composition consists of about 18–20% chromium, 11–15% nickel, 3–4% molybdenum, and up to 0.03% carbon. The alloy shows superior mechanical properties with tensile strength of around 515 MPa, yield strength of 205 MPa, and elongation of 35%. Its improved resistance against pitting as well as crevice corrosion suits it for use in exposure to severe chemical conditions.

SS 317L Hex Bars/Rods are commonly used in chemical processing, marine environments, pharmaceuticals, and food processing due to their excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. They are ideal for handling aggressive chemicals, including sulfuric acid, bleaching solutions, and pulp liquor. In construction, they are used for structural components and fittings.
SS 317L Hex Bars/Rods typically range from 6 mm to 100 mm in diameter, with lengths up to 6 meters. Tolerances generally conform to ±0.5 mm for diameter. These dimensions and tolerances ensure precision for machining, making them ideal for applications requiring high strength, corrosion resistance, and tight fit.
The high chromium (18-20%) and molybdenum (3-4%) content in SS 317L enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion by forming a passive oxide layer that protects against chloride-induced degradation. The low carbon content further reduces the risk of stress corrosion cracking, ensuring durability in harsh chloride environments.
Stainless Steel 317L Hex Rods/Hex Bars are being extensively utilized in applications requiring high resistance to chemical and marine environments. Typical uses are chemical processing plants, pulp and paper mills, power generation plants, food and beverages, and pharmaceutical equipment. These hex rods find ideal fabrication in heat exchangers, tanks, condensers, and evaporators. Their low carbon content minimizes the risk of sensitization and corrosion intergranular and they are therefore ideal for forming and welding. They are also chosen in offshore and coastal structures due to their resistance and endurance to saltwater corrosion.
